The remarkable history of this building tells a story about Eduard Kirstein who founded Shur-On, an optical manufacturing company. The Kirstein Building was built so that Shur-On’s headquarters could be placed here. By 1950, Shur-On became the largest producer of optical laboratory processing machinery in the country! They couldn’t produce 24-karat gold wire rim glasses fast enough. Shur-On eventually closed its doors in the 1960’s and since then, a few companies have been in and out. The Kirstein Building in Rochester, NY is now known for its luxury lofts and Craft Cafe in the lobby. So how did this building get its unique triangular shape? In the first couple decades after construction there were multiple additions and expansions to the existing building. The Kirstein Building has even been on the National Register of Historic Places list since October 4, 1985, shortly after their major renovation in 1984! This list is the US federal government’s official list of buildings, objects, and structures deemed worthy of preservation. WOW! Although you will find little evidence of the amazing history inside this building, it is still a great story to tell!
Fast forward to now and the six-story brick building is full of beautiful, newly renovated luxury lofts, a fitness and spa center, and a cafe on the ground level. Choose from a variety of layouts! We have one bedroom/one bathroom and two bedroom/two bathroom lofts. The unique triangular shape of the building and hardwood floors throughout gives each loft its own unique character. All lofts have designated parking spaces in an enclosed parking lot. The building also contains two modern elevators, is fully sprinkled, and the heating, cooling, and electric systems have been recently upgraded. All of our tenants have full access to the basement which includes a fitness/spa center.
